What flooring accessories do I need to lay carpet?

For a standard carpet installation you’ll typically need carpet gripper rods (to anchor the carpet around the perimeter of the room), double-sided carpet tape (for joins or areas without grippers), underlay, and a bolster or stair tool to tuck the edges neatly. What adhesive should I use for LVT flooring?

For glue-down LVT installations, you’ll need a specialist LVT adhesive. Sotto offers LVT Flooring Adhesive in 5kg (covering up to 18m²) and 15kg (covering up to 55m²) sizes. Both are compatible with underfloor heating systems. You’ll also need an adhesive spreader or trowel to apply it evenly. For trims, grippers, and skirting boards, a fast-grab adhesive like Flexyfix is ideal.

Do I need underlay for LVT or SPC flooring?

Most click LVT and SPC floors don’t require a separate underlay as they come with a pre-attached underlayer. However, if your subfloor has slight imperfections, a thin acoustic or thermal underlay can help. For glue-down LVT, no underlay is used at all. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines for your specific floor before purchasing underlay.

What is a threshold strip and when do I need one?

A threshold strip (also called a trim or transition strip) is used to create a neat, safe join between two different floor surfaces, for example, between carpet and hard flooring in a doorway, or between two rooms with different floor heights. They protect the edges of your flooring and prevent trip hazards. If you’re laying new flooring up to a door threshold or adjacent room, you’ll likely need one.

How do I prepare my subfloor before laying new flooring?

A flat, smooth, and dry subfloor is essential for any new flooring installation. For minor dips, bumps, or uneven areas, a flooring feather finish compound can be used to level the surface quickly. A spiked roller helps remove air bubbles when applying self-levelling compounds. Make sure the subfloor is clean, dry, and structurally sound before you begin, poor subfloor preparation is one of the most common causes of flooring problems after installation.
