How to choose the right carpet underlay
The thickness of your carpet underlay is the easiest place to start. Thinner 6mm to 8mm underlay suits hallways, stairs and rooms where door clearance is tight. A plush 10mm or 11mm carpet underlay is a beautiful choice for bedrooms and living rooms, where you want that deep, soft, bounce-back feel underfoot.
Tog rating tells you how much warmth your underlay will hold in. A higher tog means a cosier, more insulating floor, which is lovely in bedrooms and upstairs rooms. For underfloor heating, though, you want the opposite: a specialist underfloor heating underlay with a low tog rating, so the heat can travel up through the carpet and into the room rather than being trapped below.
